Bratislava is situated on both banks of the river Danube in southwestern part of Slovak Republic. Bratislava is located near the Austrian, Czech and Hungarian borders.

Bratislava is the wealthiest and economically most important region in Slovakia with significant industrial, cultural and historical center, with cluster of universities and science centers. Bratislava’s primary income is 105% of the EU-27 average and accounts about 26% of the Slovak GDP.

There are nearly 45,000 enterprises in Bratislava Self Governing Region. More than 75% of Bratislava's population works in the service sector, mainly composed of trade, banking, IT, telecommunication industry, tourism.

Even if Bratislava region is a small European region, it is a region where creative and cultural industries command an unusually high share of regional employment as well as being the 12th highest in Europe by CCI LQ and CCI Focus (Priority sector report: Creative and cultural industries, The European Clusters Observatory, 2011).

The creativity is the key to smart city process. We believe i.e. SMART project know-how will become part of the tool kit for Bratislava city political and civil leaders to create 21st century city, better equipped to deal with industrial mono specialization, brain-drain, low-cost competitive advantages and low innovation and creative capacity.
